Bodegas Nekeas

Bodegas Nekeas

Nekeas is one of the northernmost vineyards in Spain. Cultivation of grapes is possible thanks only to the Sierra Perdón, which provides a mountainous barrier protecting the Nekeas Valley from the cold winds of the Pyrenees. The valley is also caressed by the moderating influences of the Atlantic Ocean (only 70 Km away) and the Mediterranean, whose essence flows up the Ebro Valley. This climate would be difficult to find elsewhere on the Iberian peninsula.

Summers end early and the cool nights of fall provide an extraordinarily long period for grapes to mature. This heightens the complexity of the grape and resulting wines.

On the other side of the Nekeas Valley, the geography is complicated. There are sharp slopes with altitudes up to 650 meters facing out in all directions. This results in a wide variety of stone outcroppings, diverse both in structure and composition, as rich as the wines produced here.

All of these factors result in several of microclimates in the valley, each favouring a particular variety of grapes: Grenade, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Due to its excellent location, climate and geological characteristics, the Nekeas Valley is one of the great Spanish wine regions, long renown for quality wines. The influences of the Cantabrian and Mediterranean Seas are deeply engrained - from the mountains to the north, where the winters are cold and humid, to the valley where they tend to be mild and dry. Grapes here are grown up to an elevation of 600 meters.
